Every parent knows this scenario — one moment your child is happily playing in the garden, and the next there’s a scraped knee, a bruise, tears after a squabble with a sibling, an itchy insect bite or even a sunburned nose to deal with.

Whilst a well-stocked first aid kit is essential, nature also provides some wonderful remedies for these everyday mishaps. Here are a few suggestions for creating a child-friendly natural first aid kit.

Calendula Cream

Traditionally used as a natural antiseptic for cuts and grazes, calendula helps prevent infection and promotes faster skin healing. Cleanse the wound and apply with clean hands at least twice daily. It’s also useful for soothing nappy rash—apply only to the affected area each nappy change.

Comfrey Cream

Also known as “knitbone” Comfrey has a long history of use for supporting the healing of bruises and injuries by helping the body clear away debris at the wound site. It’s also beneficial for sprains, strains, and even fractures. Apply topically to the injury site two to three times daily.

Bach Flowers - “Rescue Remedy”

This gentle flower essence blend offers emotional first aid, providing calm and reassurance during anxious or stressful moments. Safe for children and adults alike, it can be a helpful addition to your kit when everyone needs a moment to breathe.  Take four drops under the tongue or rub on pulse points as often as needed.

Aloe Vera

A trusted go-to for minor sunburns and mild kitchen scalds, aloe instantly cools and soothes the skin. It’s also excellent for itchy insect bites thanks to its natural antihistamine properties that reduce itching and help prevent infection by breaking the scratching cycle. Apply to the affected area as often as needed.

A natural first aid kit can be an effective complement to your medical supplies. Using gentle yet powerful plant-based remedies like Calendula, Comfrey, Rescue Remedy and Aloe can help support both your physical healing and your emotional wellbeing. With these natural plant allies on hand, you’ll be ready to handle life’s little bumps with calm and confidence.
