The start or return to school can be an exciting time, it can also be challenging and emotional, for both little people and their grown-ups. Thankfully, there are some simple yet effective plant allies we can lean on for support during this time.

Flower essences

The well known Bach flower combination ‘Rescue Remedy’ is a great go-to for the first days of school. Simply add 6 drops to a water bottle for emotional support throughout the day. Grown-ups, this can be helpful for you too!

A herbal flower bath

It’s beautifully grounding for children to get into the garden and pick flowers and herbs at the end of the day, to settle those big feelings. It takes the experience to another level when you add the flowers to a bath for the children to enjoy. Some of our calming, uplifting favourites include calendula, borage, rose and geranium flowers, leaves of mint, lemon balm, geranium, even nasturtium. You can up-level the relaxation of this bath by adding a dash of Epsom salts (magnesium is a wonderful relaxant), and a few drops of child safe essential oils like lavender or chamomile.

Herbal teas or infusions

These are sometimes overlooked for children but are very effective. Beautiful calming herbs such as chamomile, lemon balm, mint, passionflower or lavender are well suited to kids. Add a dash of honey and some cute cups to create an after school or before bedtime tea party. Of course, they are also a great way to start the day to settle nerves and nervous tummies. In warmer weather you can create herbal iced teas by chilling the infusion and adding a squeeze of lemon, lime or orange juice to taste. If your child is not into herbal teas, why not try a warm herbal milk.
